Ninh Binh town itself has no tourist attractions it does though have some good hotels and restaurants at value for money prices. The reason people come to Ninh Binh is for interesting scenery nearby and temples built in hilly areas. The most popular which is the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex near to Ninh Binh which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This an area which you can around by boat. The three principle attractions in the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex are the Trang An Grottoes, Tam Cốc and Bich Dong. Trang An Grottoes and Tam Cốc features caves which you can enter in a boat set within a area of steep limestone karst hills. This area is often compared to Ha Long Bay as the geography is similar, just inland. In Bich Dong there are more caves higher up the mountain and a series of Pagodas. The Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex is a magical place and well worth stopping a night or two in Ninh Binh.
There are a few other places worth visiting around Ninh Binh if you have a second day available. The ruins of an ancient city of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital are located about 15 km outside the city. Ninh Binh also has an impressive cathedral, Phat Diem Cathedral, and more recently a large temple complex with ornate pagoda has been built on the mountainside at Bai Dinh, 22 km by road from Ninh Binh Railway Station.
