Temple of Literature in Hanoi
Located 1.5 km by road to the north east of Hanoi Railway Station the Temple of Literature hosted the Imperial Academy of Vietnam from 1076 to 1779.
History of the Imperial Academy
The Imperial Academy was where senior administrators, noble men, and members of the Imperial Family came to be receive an education based on the teachings of Chinese Philosopher Confucius. The temple consists of a series of courtyards in a long row with the main teaching buildings at the rear.
Interesting features of the temple to look out for include the large stones standing around a central courtyard bearing inscriptions of the names of students who successfully graduated from the academy and the many shrines to teachers and important thinkers located inside the pagoda off the fifth courtyard.
