About Travel to Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi is a city of around 120,00 inhabitants. Not so many foreign tourists choose to stay in Dong Hoi itself. Dong Hoi was nearly completed destroyed by the United States Air Force in 1965 and the city which built after the war, although pleasantly located on a river, is not particularly picturesque. There are, however, two beaches near the city (Nhat Le beach and Bao Ninh) which are fairly good.
Travel to Phong Nha
The main reason most foreign visitors come to Dong Hoi is because it’s the closest railway station to the village of Phong Nha. From Dong Hoi Railway Station it’s 44 km by road to Phong Nha. The journey can be completed by taxi, and there are normally lots of taxis waiting outside the train station to take passengers to Phong Nha. A cheaper alternative is to take a local bus to Phong Nha. Bus services to Phong Nha depart fairly frequently from a bus stop close to Dong Hoi Post Office in the city centre.

About Phong Nha
Phong Nha is a small village in a scenic location on the Song River at the edge of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Phong Nha is a pleasant destination in it’s own right with a holiday atmosphere, and plenty of nightlife. Local attractions, other than the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, include kayaking in the river and visting rural restaurants such as the Pub With Cold Beer.
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers an area of 857.54 square kilometres. The park has plenty of wild animals and trekking or mountain biking routes. The most interesting feature of the park, however, is below ground. There are over 300 caves in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, including some of the largest caves in the world such as Son Doong, Hang En, Tu Lan and Hang Va.
Reaching the largest of caves in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park involves a long walk through the jungle and an overnight stay in a tent. Visitors on these types of expeditions are required to join an organised tour, and these tours are relatively expense compared to the cost of living in Vietnam. Some of the other caves in the park, however, are much easier and cheaper to visit. The most accessible of the caves is Phong Nha Cave which you visit by boat from a pier right in the centre of Phong Nha Village. Phong Cave is partially submerged which means visitors can travel about 1,500 metres into the cave in a small boat.
