About Travel to Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Thap Cham Railway Station is located in the western part of the city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham. The railway station  is very close to Po Klong Garai Temple but 12 km by road from the beach in the eastern part of Phan Rang – Thap Cham City.

About Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Phan Rang – Thap Cham City encompasses what was previously two separate towns, Phan Rang and Thap Cham. The railway station is in Thap Cham, as is the major historical attraction in the area, Po Klong Garai Temple. Other than this temple there is little else for tourists to do or see in Thap Cham itself, and very few facilities for holiday makers.

The other part of the city, Phan Rang, is a much busier place which is popular with Vietnamese holiday makers. The main attraction in Phan Rang is the 4.5 km long gently curving white sand beach located right in the city centre. There are lots of hotels and restaurants located on or near the beach, although few cater specifically to foreign visitors.

Po Klong Garai Temple

Po Klong Garai Temple is the most famous visitor attraction in Phan Rang – Thap Cham. The temple consists of three towers built in the 14th Century.

Thap Cham was the last capital city of the Cham Empire, which had ruled over large parts of Southern Vietnam and Cambodia from around the 2nd Century until the Cham civilisation disintegrated in the 15th Century. Po Klong Garai Temple is notable among Vietnam’s Cham temples for being one the last major architectural undertakings of an empire in terminal decline.

Po Ro Me Cham Tower

For visitors with a particular interest in Cham architecture there is another Cham temple which you can visit, Po Ro Me Cham Tower, located 16 km by road to the south west of Thap Cham Railway Station. In order to reach this temple you need your own vehicle.

Coastal Roads

Another popular activity for visitors to Phan Rang – Thap Cham City is driving along the coast on a rented motorbike. There are two main routes. One route, which is 38 km long, involves travelling south along the coast to the town of Ca Na. The second longer route, about 62 km, travels north along the coast to Cam Thonh Dong and features spectacular scenery including coastal views of Hon Chut Island.
