About Phan Thiet

With 300,000 permanent residents, Phan Thiet is a medium sized city by Vietnamese standards and a lot smaller than Ho Chi Minh City, which has around 9 million inhabitants. In order to continue your journey by public transport after alighting from the train at Binh Thuan you need to travel into Phan Thiet City. The easiest way to complete the journey is by taxi, although very inexpensive bus services are available.

Phan Thiet City is not a majot tourist destination in it’s own right. There are beaches to the South of the city centre, however, they are far from the best beaches in the province. The city also has an important historical site, the Po Shanu Cham Towers, which is located in the North Eastern part of the city. Phan Thiet has plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars which cater for foreign visitors so there is no lack of amenieties available for visitors who choose to stay overnight in Phan Thiet.

Ham Tien

By far the most popular tourist destination in Binh Thuan Province is the area in and around the village of Ham Tien, which is located 15 km by road to the East of Phan Thiet. Ham Tien is located in the centre of the 10 km Rang Beach and there are many hotels and resorts fronting onto the beach and less expensive accommodation further inland. This part Binh Thuan also has lots of restaurants and Western style bars.

The beach itself is attractive. The other notable thing about the area is that it becomes very windy at certain times of the year, so much so that Rang Beach is generally considered to be the second best kite surfing destination in South East Asia, after Boracay in the Phillipines. There are several kite surfing school on the beach and places where enthusiasts can rent kite surfing equipment.

Mui Ne Village

Further East along the coast from Ham Tien is Mui Ne, which is a small fishing port town with a picturesque harbour. Visiting Mui Ne is a popular activity for tourists staying in Ham Tien. Near the harbour and on the beach locally caught fish and crab is sold, both fresh and cooked, at value for money prices. Lots of people come to Mui Ne Village to eat seafood on the beach. Mui Ne also has a small local market which is popular with tourists.
