About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi Railway Station is the connection point between the Vietnamese railway network and local and taxi bus services to Phong Nha. Phong Nha is a village on the edge of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, and an increasingly popular tourist destination in it’s own right.

Travel from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha

Dong Hoi Railway Station is located 44 km by road from Phong Nha. If you are planning to go direct from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, without spending a night in Dong Hoi City, then choosing a train which arrives in Dong Hoi no later than early evening is a good idea.

The easiest, and most expensive way, to travel from Dong Hoi Railway Station to Phong Nha is to take a taxi. There are normally lots of taxis, formal and informal, waiting outside the train station for the next train to stop. Most of the foreign visitors coming to Dong Hoi will all be travelling to the same destination, Phong Nha. Expect to be asked for up to 1,000,000 VND for the journey to Phong Nha, and aim to negotiate with the taxi driver a price about half of that amount.

A cheaper option is to take a local bus to Phong Nha. Local bus services to Phong Nha depart from the Nam Ly Bus Station, 1.3 km walking distance to the east of Dong Hoi Railway Station. By local bus the journey to Phong Nha takes around 90 minutes, and the last service of the day normally departs at 17:00.

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha Village is similar to Tam Coc Village in Ninh Binh in that it has lots of hotels, bars and restaurants catering to foreign and domestic tourists. Unlike Tam Coc Village, however, the buildings in Phong Nha are not so closely packed together. A lot of the accommodation in Phong Nha Village is located on the banks of the scenic Song River, but there are also plenty of places to stay outside of the centre of village, such as Phong Nha Lake House Resort. Some of the best bars and restaurants, such as the Pub with Cold Beer, are also located a moderate walk away from the village itself.

Kayaking on the river and walks around the picturesque countryside are popular daytime activities for visitors to Phong Nha. At night the liveliest part of Phong Nha Village is on the stretch of road to the east of Central Backpackers Hostel – Phong Nha.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

The most popular activity for people staying in Phong Nha Village is visiting the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers a massive area (857.54 square kilometres) and offers a varied set of attractions to visitors ranging from wildlife spotting to mountain biking routes. The most notable features of the park, however, are its 300 or so caves including the largest cave in the world.

One consideration for visitors to the park is that a lot of the attractions are difficult to access. Reaching the largest caves in the park, for example, involves joining an organised tour to walk for a whole day from the road to reach the cave, and then camping overnight before walking back to the road.

Other attractions in the park are much easier to visit. The easiest is Phong Nha Cave. Local wooden boat services taking visitors into Phong Nha Cave depart from a jetty in Phong Nha Village. Nearly all tourists coming to Phong Nha will take the boat trip into Phong Cave. As a consequence the river leading to the Phong Nha, and the cave itself, get very busy during the tourist season.
