Ninh Binh City is a small city of around 160,000 permanent residents and the administrative capital of Ninh Binh Province. Ninh Binh City itself has few points of interest for visitors, however, it’s the major transport hub of the province and the starting point for visiting the many places which are of interest in the area.

Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex is the major visitor attraction in Ninh Binh Province. The Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex is a compact area covering 62 square kilometres on the edge of Ninh Binh City. From the city it’s an easy day trip, although many visitors choose to stay outside the city centre closer to the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex.

The unique feature of the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex is the steep sided limestone hills rising from an area with flat rice fields and small meandering rivers. One of the popular things to do in this park is to take a boat trip into one of the partially submerged caves within the limestone hills. Climbing to the top of Hang Mua Peak for the views and to visit the ancient hill top pagoda is also highly recommended.

• Bai Dinh Temple is a massive religious complex located 22 km by road to the west of Ninh Binh City. This temple has an impressive prayer hall, pagoda and series of 500 statues of the Lord Buddha.
• Located 12 km by road to the west of Ninh Binh City, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was the capital Vietnam from 968 to 1009.
• Phat Diem Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church completed in 1891. The design of the temple is a unique blend of Vietnamese and European architectural styles. To reach Phat Diem Cathedral you need to travel by road about 30 km to the south of Ninh Binh City.
