About Travel to Dong Hoi


Dong Hoi is a medium sized city with few attractions for tourists. Dong Hoi was almost completely destroyed in 1965 by the United States Air Force and everything has been rebuilt since then. Dong Hoi has hotels, restaurants and bars, and two good swimming beaches nearby, however, it doesn’t have enough of interest for most visitors to stay any longer than a night on route to somewhere else.

Travel to Phong Nha

The majority of foreign visitors alighting at Dong Hoi Railway Station are travelling to the village of Phong Nha, which is 44 km by road from the train station. Passengers arriving in the evening into Dong Hoi may choose to stay overnight in Dong Hoi City and complete the final stage of the journey the following morning.

There are two ways to travel from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha. The cheapest option is to take one of the frequent local bus services from Nam Ly Bus Station, in Dong Hoi City, to Phong Nha. By bus the journey takes around 90 minutes. The other option is to take a taxi, which will complete the journey in under an hour but cost around 1,000,000 VND.

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha Village is pleasantly situated on the Song River, and much of the accommodation is located on the riverside. The village is a lively place, in the evenings the bars on the main road near Central Backpackers – Phoong Nha can become very busy. There are quieter places to stay outside the village, such as the Phong Nha Lake House Resort, which may suit certain types of visitors better than others.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha Village is the best place to stay for visits to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The park is massive, covering 857.54 square kilometres, and contains more than 300 caves. There are lots of different ways to enjoy the park including by trekking, mountain biking and joining overnight expeditions to visit the largest of the caves in the park, which are among the biggest in the world.

Most visitors to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park visit only a small part of the park, and in particular the caves that are easily accessible. The most easily accessible cave is Phong Nha Cave. Local wooden boats tours into Phong Nha Cave depart from a boat pier on the Song River in the centre of Phong Nha Village. You don’t need to book a tour you can simply turn up at the pier and wait a normally short period of time for a boat to become available. The tour takes a couple of hours, and passengers get to disembark from the boat when they are deep inside the cave for a brief walk before returning the way they came back to Phong Nha Village.
