About Travel to Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh Province is a popular tourist destination. Ninh Binh has several of Vietnam’s top tourist attractions and it has become very busy as consequence.

Tam Coc

The small town of Tam Coc, 6 km to the south west of Ninh Binh Railway Station, in particular gets very busy with foreign and domestic tourists during the tourist season. The main road leading through Tam Coc is packed with bars and restaurants. Much of the accommodation is located in side streets off this main road or riverside.

Very few foreigner visitors choose to stay in Ninh Binh City itself as there are fewer amenities, and foreign visitors are less well catered for. On arrival at Ninh Binh Railway Station most visitors immediately get into a taxi for the 10 minute journey to Tam Coc.

Boat Rides in Ninh Binh

The most popular tourist activity in Ninh Binh is to take a boat ride along the river in the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex. There are two boat rides you can do. The most popular one is through the Tam Coc-Bich Dong Valley. This boat ride is more popular largely because the boat pier is in the centre of Tam Coc Town. The other boat ride you can do is the Trang An Grottoes. Less people do this boat ride because the boat pier is 10 km by road from Tam Coc Town.

Both boat rides are in narrow metal boats propelled by the boat captain using oars. Each boat tour take around 90 minutes and passes through a number of partially submerged caves. Both the Tam Coc-Bich Dong Valley and Trang An Grottoes boat routes pass by steep sided limestone hills which rise from otherwise flat surrounding countryside. Both areas also get very busy with boat tours, however, the scenery on either side of the river is largely undisturbed by the large numbers of visitors.

Temples in Ninh Binh

There are several temples in Ninh Binh which are well worth visiting. Two of those are in the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex. Bich Dong Pagoda is a lakeside temple located 3 km by road from Tam Coc that you need to take a boat to visit. The other nearby temple is located on Hang Mua Peak, located 5 km by road from Tam Coc. Freom the road you need to climb about 500 steps to reach the pagoda. The views from the hill top are very good.

The major temple in the province, Bai Dinh Pagoda, is located 23 km by road from Tam Coc. Bai Dinh Pagoda is a massive and fairly new temple complex. The temple is so large that its very hard work to walk around the whole site. Open sided electric buses run around the site taking visitors from the entrance to a number of designated stops on route.

Bai Dinh Pagoda is a work in progress with more buildings planned to fill the 700 hectare site. At the present time the main attractions are the long gallery filled with statues of famous monks and the Lord Buddha, a tall pagoda with an elevator to the top, and two extremely large shrine halls. Bai Dinh Pagoda is very much a Chinese style Buddhist temple and that Chinese influence is evident in the srchitecture as well as the religious imagery.
