About Travel to Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Thap Cham Railway is the mainline train station for the city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham. Phan Rang – Thap Cham is a small city by Vietnamese standards with a population of around 160,000. The city’s coastal location makes it a popular holiday destination for Vietnamese tourists. It’s not so popular, however, with foreign visitors and lacks the same range of amenities as better known destinations, such as Nha Trang.

Cham Temples

The most iconic feature of Phan Rang – Thap Cham is Po Klong Garai Temple, which is located on a hill top overlooking Thap Cham Railway Station. Po Klong Garai Temple was built by the people of the Cham civilisation in the 13th Century. This part of Vietnam was the last stronghold of the Cham Empire, and another temple located 16 km by road to the west (Po Ro Me Cham Tower) is dedicated to the very last Cham King.

From Thap Cham Railway Station it’s an easy 1.3 km long walk to Po Klong Garai Temple. Visitors need to rent a vehicle or hire a taxi in order to visit Po Ro Me Cham Tower.

Staying Overnight in Phan Rang – Thap Cham

There is little in the way of tourist accommodation, or other facilities for tourists, in the western half of Phan Rang – Thap Cham where Thap Cham Railway Station is located. The hotels in Phan Rang – Thap Cham are all located in either the city centre (7 km to the south east of Thap Cham Railway Station) or near the beach (11 km to the south east of Thap Cham Railway Station).

If you are travelling to Phan Rang – Thap Cham during the tourist season (April to August) then we recommend that you stay in the area near the centre of the city’s 4.5 km long gently curving white sand beach. For visits outside of the main tourist season it may be better to stay closer to the city centre because many of the beach side restaurants will close down for low season, particularly if it’s raining heavily.

Coastal Tours from Phan Rang – Thap Cham

One of the principal attractions for visitors coming to Phan Rang – Tham Chap is the opportunity to explore the dramatic and beautiful coastline to the north and the south of the city. The best way to enjoy the scenery is to rent your own vehicle. There are plenty of places to stop and see along the way, including some very good beaches, particularly Kinh Beach to the north of the city.

There are two popular routes along the coastline to follow:

• Southern Route (38 km): This route goes south from Phan Rang – Tham Chap along the coastline as far as Ca Na before looping back to the city via an inland road. The highlights of this route are the viewpoints of the rugged coastline, a shipwreck, and Son Hai Village.
• Northern Route (62 km): This route follows the coastline to the north of Phan Rang – Tham Chap as far as Cam Thonh Dong before looping back inland to the city. The highlights of the northern route included Kinh Beach and Binh Tien Beach, and a series of islands near the coastline, such as Binh Hung and Hon Chut.
