About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi is an increasingly popular destination for leisure travellers in recent years. The reason for that popularity is not Dong Hoi City itself, but rather the nearby Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park which is accessible from the tourist oriented village of Phong Nha.

Travel by Train to Phong Nha

Phong Nha itself does not have a train station and visitors travelling by train should alight at Dong Hoi Railway Station, which is only 44 km from Phong Nha Village. Passengers arriving in the morning or earlier afternoon in Dong Hoi can easily complete the last part of their journey to Phong Nha by either taxi or local bus service.

Bus services stop running at around 17:00, so visitors arriving in Dong Hoi in the evening need to either take a taxi or spend a night in Dong Hoi which has a selection of good standard hotels and restaurants, some of which serve European style cuisine.

Taxi from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha

During the main local tourist season (February to August) a variety of taxis, both formal and informal, wait in the car park near the ticket hall of Dong Hoi Railway Station to meet arriving trains and take visitors to Phong Nha.

By taxi the journey from Dong Hoi Railway Station to Phong Nha takes around 40 minutes. The cost of the journey depends entirely on the driver and what they agree with passengers. There is no fixed or standard fare in use. Local bus services from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha Village depart from Nam Ly Bus Station, which is 1.3 km walking distance from Dong Hoi Railway Station. The journey by local bus takes around 90 minutes.

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha Village is similar in some respects to Tam Coc in Ninh Binh Province, which is also a major destination. Like Tam Coc, the main industry in Phong Nha Village is tourism and many of the hotels and restaurants cater very well to both domestic holiday makers and foreign visitors.

The village itself is long (about 5 km) and thin stretching along the banks of the picturesque Son River. Guesthouses and resorts on the riverside are very popular and they allow guests easy and direct access to the river for activities such as kayaking. Visitors can also stay in the centre of the village away from the river closer to busier bars and restaurants in backpacker style accommodation, such as Central Backpackers Hostel – Phong Nha. Another option is to stay away from Phong Nha Village itself in a nearby scenic location, at Phong Nha Lake House Resort for example.

Travel to Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha is located on the edge of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park and you can enter the park both by road or boat tour, depending upon what it is in the park that you intend to visit.

In terms of transport within the park visitors need to bear in mind that park covers a very large area (857.54 square kilometres) and it’s also mountainous, with 12 mountain peaks over 1,000 metres above sea level. The road network covers only a fraction of the total area of the park and to visit just the entrances to the park’s mega caves involves a day-long walk through the jungle and overnight camping.

A small proportion of visitors to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park choose to trek the difficult reach caves and mountains in the park. Much more popular are the caves located within easy driving distance of Phong Nha, and the most popular of all is Phong Nha Cave which you reach by fixed price boat tour from a river pier located in the centre of Phong Nha Village.
