About Travel to Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Thap Cham Railway Station is located in the western half of the Southern Vietnamese city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham. Not so many foreign visitors come to Phan Rang – Thap Cham, although during the dry season it’s a popular destination for Vietnamese tourists.

Staying in Phan Rang – Thap Cham

One characteristic feature of Phan Rang – Thap Cham is that the city is very spread out. The train station is located 7 km to the north west of the city centre, and the two city centre beaches are located 4 to 7 km to the east of the actual city centre. The geography of the city is not as visitor friendly as Da Nang or Nha Trang, although the beaches are just as nice.

If you are visiting Phan Rang – Thap Cham in the tourist season then consider staying near either Ninh Chu Beach or Bin Son Beach. Outside of the tourist season there will be very little open in the beach side areas of the city and staying in the city centre, which is to the west by the Song Cai Pgan Rang river, is a better option.

Cham Towers

Phan Rang – Thap Cham has two significant historical sites. The first, and best, of these is Po Klong Garai Temple which is only 1.3 km walk from the train station. Po Klong Garai Temple is a small cluster of buildings on a hill constructed by the Cham Empire during the 13th Century. At that time the Cham Empire had shrunk from covering most of Southern Vietnam and parts of Cambodia to a much smaller kingdom centred around what is modern day Phan Rang – Tham Cham city.

The other Cham temple site is the Po Ro Me Cham Tower, located 16 km by road from Thap Cham Railway Station. The major point of interest at this much smaller temple is the engraving of King Po Ro Me, who was the very last King of an independent Cham state. The Cham people still exist but live spread out in relatively small groups across South East Asia.

Touring the Coastline

The other major reason to visit Phan Rang – Tham Cham is to explore a rugged coastline of cliffs, islands and wind swept beaches. There are two excellent routes to follow on a motorbike taking in spectacular scenery away from the crowds of tourists you would find in better known destinations such as Sapa and Ha Long Bay.

The longest of the two routes (62 km) follows the coastal road north to Cam Thonh Dong, with excellent views of Hon Chut Island near the top end of the coastal section of this route.

The second shorter route (38 km) involves following the coastal road south to the town of Ca Na before looping back inland to Phan Rang – Thap Cham. There are some really good scenic spots with areas to park roadside on the way, as well as some great small beaches and the village of Son Hai where you can stop at a beachfront cafe for a break.
