About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi is a fairly large city with around 120,000 permanent residents, close to two fairly good swimming beaches (Nhat Le beach and Bao Ninh). Few leisure visitors who alight from the train at Dong Hoi do so to spend time in Dong Hoi. Most tourists who come to Dong Hoi are on route to Phong Nha Village and the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

Local Transport from Dong Hoi Railway Station

By road it is 44 km from Dong Hoi Railway Station to Phong Nha Village. There are two ways to complete the journey by public transport:

• Taxi: Formal and informal taxis wait out Dong Hoi Railway Station. There is no fixed rate for the journey to Dong Hoi. The fare tends to range from 600,00 to 1,000,000 VND ($25 to 40 USD) for the journey which takes around 40 minutes.
• Bus: Bus services to Phong Nha Village depart from Nam Ly Bus Station, which is located 1.3 km walking distance to the east of Dong Hoi Railway Station. The last bus of the day is usually around 17:00 and the journey typically takes 90 minutes.

If you are arriving late at night at Dong Hoi Railway Station and need somewhere to sleep for a few hours before continuing your journey then try the nearby Hung Thinh Motel. The Hung Thinh Motel is located on the approach road to the main railway station building in Dong Hoi.

Phong Nha Village

The majority of visitors to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park choose to stay overnight in Dong Hoi. There’s not really any accommodation in the national park itself except for camping in a tent, and nearly all the accommodation close to the park is located within Phong Nha Village.

Phong Nha Village itself is a long thin 5 km long stretch of hotels, restaurants and shops spread out along a road which runs parallel to the Song River. The liveliest part of the village, particularly at night, is along the main road close to Central Backpackers Hostel – Phong Nha.

Canoeing in the Son River is a popular activity, as are walks in the surrounding countryside which contains some very pleasant small restaurants, such as the famous Pub with Cold Beer.

Visiting Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers a vast area (857.54 square kilometres) on the border with Laos forming part of a much larger larger protected wilderness area of around 4,000 square kilometres. The park is home to a wide variety of different plants and animals including 154 species of mammals and 314 types of birds. The park is also mountainous with 12 hills reaching 1,000 metres above sea levels and over 300 caves.

The caves are the most visited parts Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The park’s mega caves, including Son Doong (the largest known cave in the world), are located far into the interior of the park. To reach these caves visitors need to join an organised expedition involving a day-long walk from the nearest road to reach the entrance to one of the caves where visitors then sleep overnight in tents.

Other smaller caves in the park are much easier and cheaper to reach than the mega caves. The easiest and most popular cave to visit is Phong Nha Cave. Boat tours to Phong Nha Cave depart from a river boat pier in Phong Nha Village. The boat tour takes visitors about 1.5 km into the cave where they disembark the boat for a short time to continue further into the cave on foot. Paradise Cave is also easy to visit. The entrance to the cave is a 1.6 km walk from the road and visitors descend into the cave via a series of long staircases.
