About Travel to Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi is the capital city of Quang Binh Province, in Central Vietnam located roughly halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Dong Hoi City
Dong Hoi is a fairly large city, with over 120,000 permanent residents, and it is also a city characterised by its modern buildings. People have lived in and around Dong Hoi for a long time. Archaeologists have found remains in the vicinity suggesting people have lived in the area for at least 12,000 years.
The reason that all the buildings in the city are modern is that the American military destroyed almost every building during a bombing raid in 1965 leaving only part of a church and a city gate standing. Dong Hoi has recovered since to become a thriving city with the beginnings of a tourist industry. Despite Dong Hoi’s coastal location it’s not as popular a destination as other major cities in Central Vietnam such as Da Nang and Hue.

Beaches in Dong Hoi
One of the things that Dong Hoi has going to for it is the picturesque river running through the centre of the city. Dong Hoi also has two beaches near the city centre, Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach. Neither beach is massively overdeveloped. More popular are Da Nhay and Ly Hoa beaches around 60 km to the north.
Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The major attraction in the area, and the reason most foreign visitors come to Dong Hoi, is the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Dong Hoi is the transport hub for access to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, which is located 43 km by road inland from Dong Hoi Railway Station. The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers an area of more than 800 square kilometres which contains 12 hills over 1,000 metres in height and around 300 caves, including the world’s largest cave, the Son Doong cave. The area above ground is also great for hiking and cycling and contains a large number of different species of animals, birds and reptiles.
