About Travel to Binh Thuan

The coastal areas of Binh Thuan Province are a popular destination for both local and foreign holiday makers. Binh Thuan is much closer to Ho Chi Minh City than Nha Trang and less built up. In addition to that, part of the coastline is very windy which is excellent for kite surfing.

Arrival by Train in Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan Railway Station is located 12 km by road from Phan Thiet City. Phan Thiet City does have its own railway station but none of the trains from Hue stop there.

Many visitors will take a taxi from Binh Thuan Railway Station to their accommodation. If you want to complete the journey by local bus services you first need to take a bus into Phan Thiet City and then take another service to reach other destinations in the province.

Phan Thiet City

Phan Thiet is a sizeable city with around 300,000 permanent residents. The thing the city is most famous for is its own special blend of fish sauce, millions of litres of which is still made there every year.

Phan Thiet City itself is not the destination which most visitors are headed toward. In relation to the local tourist industry, Phan Thiet is principally a transit point from which to reach the long stretches of coast line to the east, and to the south, of the city centre.

Phan Thiet does have a city centre beach, some hotels and resorts catering to holiday makers, and plenty of restaurants and food stalls. The local style of cuisine includes some unique dishes and lots of seafood and Phan Thiet is the best place to try it.

What Phan Thiet also has is a significant historical site, the Po Shanu Towers, located 7 km to the east of the city centre. The Po Shanu Towers were constructed by the Cham Empire in the 9th Century and bear many similarities to the most famous Cham temple, Po Nagar which is located in Nha Trang.

Mui Ne Beach

The most popular part of Binh Thuan is the 27 km long stretch of coastline to the east of Phan Thiet City. This is where the kite surfing schools are located and where the competitions happen.

The name ‘Mui Ne’ is generally used to refer to the entire length of the 27 km stretch of coastline, although Mui Ne is in fact the name of a fishing village at the far eastern end of the 27 km. There are several beaches and village along the way before you reach Mui Ne Village.

The busiest and most developed area is Ham Tien, which is located about half way between Phan Thiet City and Mui Ne Village on the 10 km long Rang Beach. Ham Tien is a tourist town with lots of accommodation, restaurants and late night bars. Younger visitors will appreciate how lively Ham Tien is. Older visitors and families may enjoy that less.

Close to Mui Ne Village is one of two large areas of inland sand dunes known as the ‘Red Dunes’. Slight further up the coast from Mui Ne Village is a second area known as the ‘White Dunes. Both areas are popular tourist attractions. Plants and animals suited to desert conditions live in these areas. There are also activities to try such as riding dune buggies and sledging down dunes on plastic trays.

Tien Thanh Beach

As an alternative to busy Mui Ne Beach, visitors can try the 20 km long stretch of beach running south from Phan Thiet City, often referred to as Tien Thanh Beach. There are lots of resorts spaced quite far apart for the whole length of the beach. There is also an amusement park, Novaworld Complex, with a large water park and an even larger golf course about a third of way along the beach from Phan Thiet City.

Right at the southern tip of Tien Thanh Beach is a rocky headland called Kê Gà Cape which features a light house. The light house dates back to the 19th Century and is believed to be the oldest in Vietnam. The coastline is stunning in its own right.
