Thap Cham Railway Station is located in the western half of the city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham. Phan Rang – Thap Cham has around 160,000 permanent residents and attracts mostly Vietnamese holiday makers who come to enjoy the city’s 4.5 km long curving beach.

Staying in Phan Rang – Thap Cham

There are few places to stay close to Thap Cham Railway Station, and few amenities for visitors, particularly foreign visitors. During the tourist season the best places to stay in Phan Rang – Thap Cham are near Ninh Chu Beach or Bin Son Beach, 10 to 12 km by road from the mainline railway station.

Outside the tourist season, when the weather is rainy, we recommend staying in the city centre 4 km to the west of the coast as very little will open close to the beach at that time of year due to the lack of visitors.

Cham Historical Sites

There are two Cham historical sites to visit in Phan Rang – Thap Cham. The more famous of the two, Po Klong Garai Temple, is 1.3 km walking distance from Thap Cham Railway Station. For passengers with light luggage, it would be fairly easy to break up a long journey with a short stop over of 1 to 2 hours in Phan Rang – Thap Cham to visit Po Klong Garai Temple without staying overnight.

Po Klong Garai Temple is a 13th Century temple built on a hill which is easily visible from the train station. Po Klong Garai Temple is a later construction than the more famous 9th Century Po Nagar Temple in Nha Trang, built at a time when the Cham Empire was fading.

The other local Cham historical site, Po Ro Me Cham Tower, is dedicated to the very last Cham Emperor, King Po Ro Me. Po Ro Me Cham Tower is located 16 km by road from Thap Cham Railway so visitors need to hire transport to get there. The feature of the temple that is most interesting is the engraving of King Po Ro Me.

Coastal Routes

Hiring a car or motorbike to explore the coastline around Phan Rang – Thap Cham is one of the most popular visitor activities. There are two routes you can take, one heading north and looping back inland to the city, and the other going south and also lopping back to Phan Rang – Thap Cham via an inland route.

The route north is the longest (62 km). It follows the coastline past the picturesque Hon Chut Island to the town of Cam Thonh Dong before travelling on a straighter faster road back to Phan Rang – Thap Cham.

The other route is slightly over half the distance (38 km) of the northern route. This route follows the coast south to Ca Na before heading inland back to the city. There are some good beaches, viewpoints and a coastal village to visit on the way.
