Located only 3 to 5 hours by train from Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Thuan is an ideal place to stop to break up the long 8 to 10 hours journey by train from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City. Binh Thuan Province is very popular for its beautiful coastline, and also its historical sites, forests and mountains.

Local transport in Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan Train Station is located on the main north to south railway line and 12 km to the north of the provincial capital Phan Thiet. There is a single daily train service between Phan Thiet City itself and Ho Chi Minh City, but for passengers travelling south by train the closest railway station is Binh Thuan Railway Station.

For local bus services to destinations throughout the province, travellers arriving by train will most likely need to first travel into Phan Thiet City to board another bus to their final destination. The fastest way to travel from Binh Thuan Railway Station to Phan Thiet City is by taxi. although there are local bus services available.

Phan Thiet City is fairly large, with other 300,000 permanent residents. The city has a beach and a number of tourist resorts, but it tends not to be a popular holiday destination in its own right for foreign visitors who mostly choose to stay closer to one of the better beaches to the east of the city.

Po Shanu Cham Towers

Phan Thiet’s one major tourist attraction, the Po Shanu Towers, is located 7 km by road to the east of the city centre. The Po Shanu Towers are part of a temple founded in the 9th Century by the Cham Civilisation. Visitors to Nha Trang will have had the opportunity to visit the better known Cham temple of Po Nagar, however, the Po Shanu Towers are nonetheless still worth visiting.

Things to do in Binh Thuan

The main attraction in Binh Thuan Province is the 20 km long stretch of coastline running east from Phan Thiet City to the small fishing village of Mui Ne. This stretch of coastline, often referred to as ‘Mui Ne’, features several long beaches including the 10 km long Rang Beach near Ham Tien Village. This part of the coastline is notoriously windy and as consequence the village of Ham Tien has grown into a major centre for windsurfing and kite surfing.

Another unusual attraction in Binh Thuan is its two clusters of massive sand dunes. One cluster known as the Red Dunes is located just to the north of Mui Ne Village. The other cluster, known as the White Dunes, is located 27 km by road to the north east of Mui Ne Villages. These sand dunes are interesting to visit to see the plants, trees and animals that live in this desert like environment. Driving across the dunes in buggies and sliding down the dunes are plastic trays are also popular activities, particularly for younger visitors.
