About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi is the connection point between Vietnam’s railway network and bus services to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, which is located 43 km by road from Dong Hoi. The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers an area of 857.54 square kilometres and is best known for its more than 300 caves, including the world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave. In order to reach the largest caves in the park, such as Son Doong Cave and Hang En Cave, visitors need to join an organised tour to undertake a multi-day expedition as they are located a long walk away from the nearest road within difficult to navigate dense forest. More easily accessible is Phong Nha Cave which you can visit by boat via a subterranean river. There is also plenty to do and see above ground in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park which features great hiking and mountain biking trails, and a wide range of animals, birds, plants and trees.

Dong Hoi itself is a medium sized city by Vietnamese standards, with around 120,000 permanent residents. Dong Hoi has virtually no buildings older than 50 years as nearly all the city was destroyed during a bombing campaign by the US armed forces in 1965. The city has been rebuilt with what are, often, unattractive buildings. The more pleasant parts of the city are on the riverside, and the two beaches which are within walking distance of the city centre. Better beaches, however, can be found within an hour’s drive from the city, such as Da Nhay and Ly Hoa beaches. Some visitors find that they really like Dong Hoi because it doesn’t have that many tourists, and the local people are friendlier as a consequence.
