About Travel to Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Thap Cham Railway Station is the train station for the city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham. Its location on the north western edge of the city is slightly inconvenient in that it’s about 6 km from the city centre and at least 10 km by road from the beach.

Visiting Phan Rang – Thap Cham

Phan Rang – Thap Cham is a fairly large city with around 160,000 permanent residents. The city itself has a long white sand beach and a single important historical site. The coastline in both directions, however, is spectacular and for those with an interest in Cham architecture there is a second significant historic site a short distance from Phan Rang – Thap Cham.

Not so many foreign visitors come to Phan Rang – Thap Cham on holiday. It’s not well known as a destination and there are relatively few hotels and restaurants specialising in catering to international tourists. The majority of leisure visitors are Vietnamese holidaymakers and this gives the city a very different character to better known destinations such as Nha Trang and Da Nang.

Po Klong Garai Temple

The most significant landmark in Phan Rang – Thap Cham is Po Klong Garai Temple. Po Klong Garai Temple is located on a small hill overlooking the main railway line 1.3 km walking distance from Thap Cham Railway Station. This 13th Century Cham temple is easily visible for anyone arriving into, or leaving, the city by train.

Po Ro Me Cham Tower

Po Ro Me Cham Tower is the second surviving Cham temple in the area, located 16 km by road to the south west of Thap Cham Railway Station. This temple, built towards the end of the 13th Century, was the last major Cham temple built by the last king of the Cham Empire before that empire crumbled.

Coastline near Phan Rang – Thap Cham

For most visitors to Phan Rang – Thap Cham it’s the coastline, rather than the historical monuments, which is the main reason to visit. The city centre beach is 4.5 km long and good for swimming and sunbathing. To the north of the south of the city centre the coastline is more rugged with some small picturesque beaches and a small island which you can visit.

A good coastal road runs both north and south from the city with some great viewpoints on route. Renting your own car or motorbike is the best way to enjoy the coastal scenery around Phan Rang – Thap Cham. There are two routes you can follow:

• Northern Loop (62 km): This route travels first east and then north along the coastline past Hon Chut Island to the town of Cam Thonh Dong before looping back to Phan Rang – Thap Cham on a straighter inland road.
• Southern Loop (38 km): This route follows the coastal road south as far as Ca Na before also looping back to the city on a faster inland road.

There are plenty of places to stop on both routes, and things to see and do. The distances involved are not that far to travel in a car or on a motorbike but both trips will take near to a full day if you make lots of stops on the way.
