About Travel to Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi is a coastal city with over 120,000 permanent residents.
Dong Hoi City
Dong Hoi is unusual in that the city only has 2 buildings, one a gate and another a church, which are more than 60 years old. The reason for this is that the city of Dong Hoi was levelled by USAF bombers in 1965. Since then the city has been rebuilt. Modern day Dong Hoi is a thriving city which receives some international visitors but not that many compared to Nha Trang or Hue.
Dong Hoi itself has a fairly good range of hotels, bars and restaurants and two beaches close to the city centre, Nhat Le beach and Bao Ninh beach. Some foreign visitor report having had very positive experiences interacting with local people in Dong Hoi and the atmosphere in the city is generally very relaxed.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The main reason most foreign visitors come to Dong Hoi is that it is the main connection point between the Vietnamese railway network and bus services to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is famous for it’s caves. There are over 300 caves in the park, including the world’s largest cave, Son Doong cave, which located deep in the jungle about a day’s walk from a road.
Visiting the Caves
To visit the larger caves in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park you need to join an organised tour and spend at least 1 night camping out in the park. Much more easily accessible are Phong Nha and Tien Son caves. You can travel 1.5 km into Phong Nha cave by boat along an underground river, and there is an illuminated staircase you walk down to visit to Tien Son cave, which has spectacular stalagmite and stalactite formations.
