About Travel to Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest and most prosperous city. Ho Chi Minh City covers a large area, of around 2,000 square kilometres, and large parts of the city are very modern. Ho Chi Minh City was established in the 17th Century, which makes it a a much newer city than Hanoi which has been settled for at least 2,000 years.

The city’s main points of interest, including most of the historic buildings, are clustered in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City. On western edge of District 1 is Pham Ngu Lao. Pham Ngu Lao is the name of both a long road and a sub-district to the south of that road. This is the part of Ho Chi Minh City where most travellers, particularly backpackers, choose to stay and it’s the final destination and starting point for many tourist bus services. From Saigon Railway Station we recommend taking a taxi or motorbike taxi as its over 3 km by road to Pham Ngu Lao, and if you did choose to walk bear in mind that the pavements on route are sometimes very narrow or blocked by parked cars and street stalls.

Pham Ngu Lao has lots of hotels, bars and restaurant focussed on catering to foreign visitors, but it doesn’t itself have any notable tourist attractions. To see the main points of interest in Ho Chi Minh City then you need to travel towards the centre of District 1. For many people walking around District 1 and back to Pham Ngu Lao at the end of the day would be fairly manageable. It’s less than 2 km walking distance from Pham Ngu Lao into the centre of District 1.

The main attractions to see in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City are:

  • Ben Thanh Market
  • Saigon Opera House
  • Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral
  • The Reunification Palace
  • Saigon Central Post Office
  • Nguyen Hue pedestrian street
  • Saigon City Hall
  • Tao Dan Park
