About Travel to Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a fairly large city with over 500,000 permanent residents. It is also Vietnam’s most popular coastal holiday destination attracting over 10 million leisure visitors in 2024, around half of whom were Vietnam holiday makers. Nha Trang is 7 to 10 hours by train from Ho Chi Minh City and accessible from other major cities in Vietnam via Cam Ranh International Airport, 30 km from Nha Trang, so it’s an easy place for local tourists to reach.

Nha Trang City

Nha Tang City is located on a gently curving 14 km long bay with 1 large island and 8 smaller islands. The focal point of Nha Trang City is the 6 km long city centre Tran Phu Beach, which features a wide sandy beach backed by lots of hotels, bars and restaurants. A very busy multi lane road also runs alongside Tran Phu Beach creating an inconvenient obstacle for visitors wanting to walk between from the city to the beach and vice versa.

Nha Trang City is very much a city of two parts. The southern part of the city is the main area for tourism, and this is where the bars and restaurants that cater to leisure visitors are mostly located. Further to the north of the city centre is an area which is more residential, and where several of the city’s most impressive cultural attractions are located.

Vinpearl Land

Besides Tran Phu Beach, Nha Trang’s most visited tourist attraction is Vinpearl Land. Vinpearl Land is located on Hon Tre Island which is 3 km off the coast from the southern end of Tran Phu Beach. Visitors can reach Vinpearl Land either by cable car or a more expensive speedboat transfer.

Vinpearl Land is a massive entertainment complex covering over 200,000 sqm of Hon Tre Island. The complex features an amusement park, hotels, a golf course, theatres, and lots of restaurants. Ticket prices to Vinpearl Land are not too expensive, particularly in comparison to prices in Western Europe, however, visitors should bear in mind that they are not permitted to bring any food and drink with them so they need to buy everything they need inside Vinpearl Land.

Po Nagar Temple

To the north of the city centre, on the other side of the Cai River, is one of the most interesting historical sites in Vietnam, Po Nagar Temple. Po Nagar Temple was built over the course of several hundred years from the 7th to 10th Centuries.

What makes the temple so interesting is that it was constructed by the Cham Empire. The origins of the Cham people are not known for sure. They are likely to come from Java, Sumatra and possibly the southern part of the Malay peninsula. The religious beliefs and customs of the Cham were different to other ethnic groups in Asia at the time. They were heavily influenced by Hinduism but they also had their own deities and myths which don’t feature in other religions. Po Nagar Temple, for example, is believed to be dedicated to the goddess Yan Po Nagar who features heavily in the Cham’s people’s own creation story.

Long Son Pagoda

Located only 500 metres walking distance from Nha Trang Railway Station, Long Son Pagoda is a much newer Buddhist temple established in its current location in 1900. The most famous feature of this temple is a 24 metre tall white statue of the Lord Buddha. The statue is located on a hill top with fantastic views. To reach the base of the statue visitors need to climb 152 steps. This isn’t as much as a chore as it may sound as the hillside leading up to the temple features lots of interesting and intricately detailed statues and reliefs, many relating to the persecution of Vietnamese Buddhists during the period leading up to the end of the Vietnamese War.

Before the steps up to the hill top statue there is a collection of very beautiful, and also very ornate, temple buildings. There is also a very good vegetarian restaurant run by the Buddhist monks just inside the main entrance to the temple which we thoroughly recommend.
