About Travel to Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan Province is a popular destination for both domestic and foreign holiday makers. Phan Thiet, the main city in Binh Thuan Province, is located 170 km to the east of Ho Chi Minh City making the local beaches, and other tourist attractions such as the sand dunes, easily to reach.

Arrival by Train

The main north-south railway line by-passes the coastal areas of Binh Thuan Province, and the main railway station is located 12 km to the north of Phan Thiet. The inconvenient aspect of travel by train to Binh Thuan Province is the need to travel some distance to reach popular coastal areas.

There are two ways to travel from Binh Thuan Railway Station to Ham Tien, which is the most popular tourist destination in the province:

• Taxi: Expect to pay around 500,000 VND for the journey from the train station to Ham Tien, although the price for local taxi services is entirely dependent on what you can agree with the driver.
• Via Phan Thiet: Take a taxi (around 200,000 VND) or a local bus service to Phan Thiet city, and from there take a local bus or shared minivan service to Ham Tien.

Where to Stay

There are 4 main tourist centres in Binh Thuan Province: Phan Thiet City, Ham Tien, Mui Ne Village, and Tien Thanh Beach:

• Phan Thiet City: Phan Thiet, with a population of around 300,000, is one of Vietnam’s medium sized cities. Phan Thiet has a beach, a wide range of sit down restaurants for tourists, and around 80 tourist hotels. As a destination it tends to be most popular with domestic tourists on short breaks.
• Ham Tien: Ham Tien is a village located on the 10 km long Rang Beach, about 15 km by road to the east of Phan Thiet City. It’s a popular holiday destination with over 200 tourist hotels and guesthouses, which is a lot more than the province’s main city. Ham Tien is lively in the evenings and it’s also the main kite surfing centre in Vietnam. Binh Thuan’s coastline is very windy.
• Mui Ne Village: Mui Ne Village is located a further 12 km to the east of Ham Tien. Mui Ne is a larger village than Ham Tien with a sizable fishing commercial fishing port. Mui Ne Village occupies a small peninsula with beaches on both sides. The beaches on the eastern side of Mui Ne Village are better and this is where the most luxurious hotels are located. Much less expensive accommodation is available away from the coast in the village. Some visitors will prefer Mui Ne Village over Ham Tien because there are fewer tourists and more things to see, particularly the harbour.
• Tien Thanh Beach: Tien Thanh Beach is an unbroken 20 km long stretch of sandy coastline running south from Phan Thiet City. This is a developing area with fewer buildings than the more developed coastline running eastward from the city. A small number of very large resorts, principally Novaworld Complex and Radisson Resort Phan Thiet, have been constructed on Tien Thanh Beach along with a selection of smaller independent hotels, but not much else.

Places to Visit in Binh Thuan

In addition to the beaches, there are several other popular tourist attractions to visit in the province:

• Po Shanu Cham Towers: Constructed in the 9th Century by the Cham Empire, the Po Shanu Cham Towers are located 7 km to the east of the centre of Phan Thiet City. This temple has similarities to the more famous Po Nagar Temple in Nha Trang.
• Red Dunes: The Red Dunes is a large desert like area with tall red sand dunes. Located a short distance to the north of Mui Ne Village the dunes are popular with tourists who largely come to slide down them on plastic trays or ride across them in dune buggies.
• White Dunes: The White Dunes are similar to the Red Dunes except for the colour, and also being more difficult to reach as they are located 27 km by road to the north east of Mui Ne Village.
• Fairy Stream: The Fairy Stream is a 1.5 km long red and white sandstone gorge. Visitors typically walk through the gorge barefoot along a soft sand riverbed. The Fairy Stream is located near Ham Tien Village.
• Ke Ga Cape: Ke Ga Cape is a rocky headland located at the southern end of Tien Thanh Beach, 20 km from Phan Thiet City. The main attraction is a 19th Century lighthouse, believed to be the oldest in Vietnam.
