About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi is a small coastal city with around 120,000 permanent residents which is believed to have been inhabited for at least 5,000 years, and then destroyed in nearly its entirety by the United States Air Force in 1965. The city itself has some attractions, and it’s popular among some travellers, however, most leisure visitors who come to Dong Hoi do so because it’s the connection point between the Vietnamese railway network and bus or taxi services to Phong Nha.

Staying Overnight in Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi has plenty of facilities for both foreign and domestic planning to spend a night in Dong Hoi. The city also has two fairly good beaches, Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach, and a pleasant riverside area.

• Hotels:
  • Hotel booking websites list around 50 hotels and guesthouses in Dong Hoi City.
  • Prices range from the equivalent of $5 USD a night for a bed in a hostel, increasing to over $100 USD for a private room in one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.

  • Dong Hoi has its own distinctive style of Vietnamese food, with local specialities including fried rice pancakes, grilled chicken with flavoured salt, fish cake noodle soup, tapioca dumplings, seafood hotpot, and oyster porridge.
  • For ‘international cuisine’ visitors need to head toward the liveliest part of the city, which is close to the west bank of the Nhat Le River, to reach popular foreign food restaurants such as 7th Heaven Restaurant and Oregano’s Pizza.

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha is a small village on the edge of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park located 44 by road from Dong Hoi Railway Station. From Phong Nha Village you can travel both by road and by boat into the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a 857.54 square kilometres wilderness area with a wide range of animals, birds, and plants, 12 hills rising over 1,000 metres above sea level, and more than 300 caves. The caves which are easily accessible to visitors include:

• Dark Cave
• Paradise Cave
• Tien Son Cave

To reach the park’s largest caves, including Son Doong Cave and Hang En Cave, you need to book a guided overnight tour well in advance. The cave entrances are located a long walk from the nearest road and there’s a quota system in place limiting the number of visitors allowed each year.
