About Travel to Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan is a coastal province whose main city, Phan Thiet, is located about 170 km to the east of Ho Chi Minh City. Binh Thuan is popular with holiday makers for several reasons, one of which is that the province has the second closest swimming and sunbathing beaches to Ho Chi Minh City after Vung Tau. It gets busy in Binh Thuan during the tourist season particularly in Ham Tien Village, which is the focal point for kite surfing in Vietnam.

Arrival by Train in Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan’s mainline railway station is located some distance from the coastal areas of the province which are popular with tourists. For onward travel passengers arriving by train either need to take a taxi from the train station direct to their accommodation or they need to travel into Phan Thiet City to catch a bus or minivan.

By taxi the journey from Binh Thuan Train Station to Ham Tien Village takes about 40 minutes and will cost around 500,000 VND, although the price will need to be agreed with the driver. Phan Thiet City is 12 km by road from the train station and the journey by taxi costs around 200,000 VND.

Where to Stay in Binh Thuan

The majority of the leisure visitors to Binh Thuan Province stay in one of three areas:

• Phan Thiet City
• The coastline to the east of Phan Thiet, often referred to collectively as ‘Mui Ne’
• The coastline to the south of Phan Thiet as far as Ke Ga Cape, often referred to as Tien Thanh Beach

By far the busiest of the three areas is the area to the east of Phan Thiet City which comprises a series of beaches and settlements the furthest east of which is Mui Ne Village.

Beaches in Binh Thuan

Binh Thuan Province has long white sandy beaches and some very attractive stretches of rugged coastline. Parts of this coastline are also very windy creating conditions for kite surfing which are generally considered to be the second best in Asia after Boracay in the Philippines.

If you are interested in kite surfing, or you are interested in nightlife, then the best place to visit is Ham Tien Village on the 10 km long Rang Beach. Ham Tien is located 15 km by road to the east of Phan Thiet City. It has several kite surfing schools and equipment rental shops , as well as bars, restaurants and hotels. Groups of foreign tourists, particularly from Russia, arriving on charter flights also come to stay in Ham Tien.

If Ham Tien doesn’t appeal, then there are plenty of other less busy places to stay on the coast near a beach in Binh Thuan Province.

To the east of Ham Tien, Mui Ne Village ia a less tourist focused alternative. Mui Ne has an active fishing industry and harbour with nearby seafood stalls and restaurants cooking the local catch. The beach on the eastern side of the peninsula where Mui Ne Village is located is better than the beach on the west side.

For a beach with even fewer other people try Tien Thanh Beach, which is to the south of Phan Thiet City. Tien Thanh Beach has some larger resorts, such as Novaworld Complex, but these are spaced out along a 20 km stretch of beach with no villages or towns located on the coast until you reach Ke Ga at the very southern end of the beach.

Other Places to Visit in Binh Thuan

In addition to the beaches and the nightlife of Ham Tien, there are a number of other places of interest to visit in Binh Thuan Province including:

• Ke Ga Cape: Located 20 km to the south of Phan Thiet City this spectacular rocky headline has a picturesque 19th Century lighthouse believed to be the oldest in Vietnam.
• Fairy Stream: Located close to Ham Tien Village, the Fairy Stream is a natural gorge created by the flow of water through an area with white and red sandy soil. Visitors walk through the 1.5 km long gorge with their feet submerged in the stream.
• Po Shanu Cham Towers: Located 7 km to the east of Phan Thiet city centre, the Po Shanu Cham Towers is a 9th Century Hindu temple built by the people of the Cham Empire which at the time controlled the southern part of Vietnam.
• Red Dunes: Located just to the north of Mui Ne Village, the Red Dunes are a popular tourist attraction where visitors can slide down the dunes on plastic trays or hire dune buggies. The wildlife and plants are also interesting.
• White Dunes: Similar to the Red Dunes, except for being a different colour and 27 km by road to the north east of Mui Ne Village.
