About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi itself is not a popular destination for leisure visitors. Most tourists alighting from the train at Dong Hoi are planning to travel to the village of Phong Nha, which is close to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

Local Transport from Dong Hoi

Phong Nha Village is located 44 km by road from Dong Hoi Railway Station. The first challenge for those arriving into Dong Hoi by train is to work out how to get to Phong Nha, and if you are arriving late in the evening you may be better off staying one night in Dong Hoi and tackling the transport challenge the next morning. Dong Hoi is a large city with tourist accommodation, restaurants and bars.

There are two ways to travel by public transport from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha:

• Taxi: There are normally lots of formal and informal taxis waiting at the train station. Expect to be asked to pay from 600,00 to 1,000,000 VND ($25 to 40 USD) VND for the journey to Phong Nha Village.
• Local Bus: Bus services to Phong Nha Village depart frequently from Nam Ly Bus Station, which is located 1.3 km walking distance to the east of Dong Hoi Railway Station. The journey by bus takes around 90 minutes, with the last service of the day departing around 17:00.

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha is a long thin village spread along the road which runs parallel to the Song River. Phong Nha is similar in many respects to Tam Coc Village in Ninh Binh in that it’s primarily a tourist town located on the edge of some stunning scenery.

The village has lots of accommodation, restaurants and some nightlife in the area around Central Backpackers Hostel – Phong Nha. Rather than stay in the centre of the village some visitors prefer to stay a short distance away in resorts such as the Phong Nha Lake House Resort for more peace and quiet.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a massive wilderness area covering 857.54 square kilometres of mountainous and densely forested land to the south west of Phong Nha Village stretching all the way to the border with Laos. There are similarly large areas of protected land on the other side of the Laos border creating an environment large enough to sustain many types of animals and birds.

The other particularly notable features of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park are it’s 12 tall hills rising to over 1,000 metres above sea level, and it’s 300 or so caves which include the largest cave in the world.

Most visitors to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park only ever visit a very small part of the park. It is relatively expensive to join organised tours you need to take to reach some of the more remote areas. For example, to visit just the entrance to the very largest caves involves trekking for a whole day along difficult to navigate jungle trails and camping overnight close to the cave mouth before walking back to the road the following day.

The most popular activity in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is the boat trip to Phong Cave. Tour boats to Phong Nha Cave depart from a pier in the centre of Phong Nha Village and travel about 1,500 metres into the cave where visitors can disembark the boat and explore more of the cave on foot before returning by boat back to the village.
