About Travel to Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam with around 9 million permanent residents, which is almost twice the number of people who live in the capital city, Hanoi. Ho Chi Minh City is relatively new city having established in the 17th Century, compared to Hanoi which was officially established in the 11th Century.

French Influence on Ho Chi Minh City

The appearance of Ho Chi Minh City, particularly the centre, is heavily influenced by the period of French colonial rule with many of the city’s landmark buildings have been built by the French. In particular, the cluster of French era buildings in District 1, such as Saigon Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral and Saigon Opera House, are amongst the city’s top tourist destintion. Nearby Tao Dan Park is also remarkable as being one of South East Asia’s largest and oldest city centre parks and an important meeting point for the city’s residents.

Stay in Pham Ngu Lao District

There are hotels located throughout Ho Chi Minh City, however, the most popular part of the city for foreign visitors (particularly younger foreign visitors) is the Pham Ngu Lao District. To the south of Pham Ngu Lao Street is a network of smaller roads packed with hotels and hostels, restaurants and bars, all focussed on catering to foreign visitors.

If it’s your first time in Ho Chi Minh City then it’s an easy option to book somewhere to stay in Pham Ngu Lao. Other parts of the city can become quite quiet in the evening and it can be difficult to find a restaurant or bar open after 20:00, but not in Pham Ngu Lao which has a vibrant nightlife scene. Pham Ngu Lao is also easy walking distance from the main attractions in District 1 and the fantastic Benh Thanh Market.
