About Travel to Dong Hoi


Dong Hoi City itself is not a major tourist destination. The reason most leisure travellers take a train to Dong Hoi is to travel to Phong Nha Village, which is located on the edge of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Dong Hoi is the closest city to the park.

About Dong Hoi City

Depending upon what time your train arrives in Dong Hoi you can either travel straight away to Phong Nha Village, or you can stay overnight in the city and travel the next day. Whilst Phong Nha Village and the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park are the main attractions in the area, Dong Hoi City is busy enough to support plenty of hotels and restaurants and there a few points of interest.

  • Hotels in Dong Hoi City:
    • Dong Hoi has around 50 hotels, and guesthouses, the best of which are located 5 to 6 km from Dong Hoi Railway Station near either a beach or the banks of the Nhat Le River. There is also a small cluster of inexpensive hotels located on the approach road to the railway station.
    • Rooms rates range from the equivalent of $10 USD up to $100 USD depending on the hotel or guesthouse. Hotels within easy walking distance of the railway station, such as the Hung Thinh Motel, charge around $15 USD a night for a basic room.
  • Food in Dong Hoi City:
    • Dishes associated with Dong Hoi include grilled chicken with flavoured salt, oyster porridge, fried rice pancakes, and seafood hotpot.
    • For other cuisines you need to travel to the east of the city in the busy area near the Nhat Le River to reach popular restaurants such as Oregano’s Pizza and 7th Heaven Restaurant.
  • Visitor Attractions in Dong Hoi City:
    • Dong Hoi City was destroyed almost in its entirety by a bombing campaign in 1965 leaving only 2 small reminders of what is believed to have been a 5,000 year old settlement. One is the front part of Tam Toa Church. The other is one of the gates to Dong Hoi’s ancient citadel.
    • Dong Hoi City does, however, have 2 pleasant beaches, Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach, and pleasant riverside areas where people congregate in the evening.
Travel from Dong Hoi City to Phong Nha Village

Visitors arriving in Dong Hoi by train have 2 options for travel to Phong Nha Village, public bus or private taxi.

The cheapest way to travel from Dong Hoi City to Phong Nha Village is to take a public bus service. The bus which travels from Dong Hoi City to Phong Nha Village is bus service ‘B4’ and it departs from Nam Ly Bus Station, which is 1,3 km walking distance from Dong Hoi Railway Station.

  • Hours: 06:00 until 17:00
  • Journey Time: 60 to 120 minutes

There are several different ways to find taxis from Dong Hoi Railway Station. You can book online in advance, or use a taxi booking app on your phone, or try to negotiate with one of the many formal and informal taxi drivers who wait outside the railway station for customers.

  • Fares: 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND (depending on how you book or how successful you are negotiating the fare with a driver).

Phong Nha Village

Phong Nha Village is a small settlement with around 3,000 permanent residents located scenically on the Son River, 44 km by road from Dong Hoi Railway Station. Phong Nha Village is very tourist oriented with over 90 hotels, hostels, and guesthouses, as well as a lot of tourist oriented restaurants and bars, many serving foreign dishes.

Phong Nha Village has a wide variety of different types of accommodation, in different locations. The cheapest places to stay are hostels in the centre of the village, away from the river, such as Jungle Boss Homestay which charges around $5 USD a night for a bed in a shared dormitory room. For river or lake views expect to pay from $20 to $50 USD a night.

Exploring the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is massive. The park covers 857.54 square kilometres, and it’s mountainous with 12 hills rising to over 1,000 metres above sea level. It’s also heavily forested and home to 154 species of mammals and 314 types of birds.

What the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is best known for, however, is its 300 caves. Some of these caves are huge and include the largest cave in the world, Son Doong.

Some parts of the park are more accessible than others. To reach the world famous mega caves such as Son Doong and Hang En you need join an organised tour and spend a whole day walking through the jungle just to get to the cave entrance where trekkers then stay overnight in tents. Other caves within the park, such as Paradise Cave, Dark Cave, and Tien Son Cave, can be easily be reached on day trips from Phong Nha Village.

The most accessible part of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, and the place where the vast majority of visitors go, is Phong Nha Cave. The reason it’s the easiest place to reach is that boat tours into Phong Nha Cave depart from a riverside pier in Phong Nha Village. No advanced booking is required. You simply go to the boat pier and pay a fixed fee for a fixed itinerary short tour:

  • Entrance Fee: 150,000 VND (per person)
  • Boat Fee: 550,000 VND per boat (up to 12 people)
  • Operating Hours: 07:30 to 15:30
  • Tour Duration: 2 hours
