About a third of Ho Chi Minh City’s tourist accommodation (over 650 hotels, hostels, and guesthouses) is located in District 1, and the majority of it is in the Pham Ngu Lao area.
For first time visitors to Ho Chi Minh City, staying in Pham Ngu Lao is an easy option. It’s easy because many of the businesses in the area are focused on catering to leisure travellers, particularly foreign leisure travellers, and also because of the wide range of transport companies operating bus services departing directly from the Pham Ngu Lao area. Pham Ngu Lao is often described as being the ‘Khao San Road’ of Vietnam for these reasons.

French Influence on Ho Chi Minh City
All but one of these attractions (The Independence Palace) relates to the period from 1858 until 1954 when Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as it was then known then, was under French control. District 1 also has many more buildings from the era of French control which visitors will pass by as they travel between the better known attractions. For this reason we recommend walking between the various different tourist attractions in Ho Chi Monh City as there are other interesting things to see on the way.
