About Travel to Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh Province is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations. The reason that it’s popular is partly because there are several major tourist attractions located fairly close together, and partly because away from the busiest areas the countryside is picturesque.

Ninh Binh City

Ninh Binh is a small city by Vietnamese standards with around 160,000 permanent residents. There are hotels and restaurants and other amenities, but the city itself is not where the majority of tourists choose to stay overnight. Some visitors, however, prefer to stay in Ninh Binh City because the hotels are typically better value for money than in the main tourist area, and because there are far fewer tourists.

Tam Coc

The village of Tam Coc, which is 6 km by road from Ninh Binh City, is the main tourist centre in Ninh Binh. There’s currently no public transport from Ninh Binh Railway Station to Tam Coc Village but there are lots of taxis, both formal and informal, which wait outside the train station for passengers. The prices charged by taxi drivers for the relatively short trip from Ninh Binh City to Tam Coc Village are expensive compared to other less visited parts of Vietnam. Expect to pay around 120,000 VND for the journey.

Tam Coc Village is small, with a single main stree,t and a lake which is the starting point for boat tours. The village is very focused on tourism. There are lots of small hotels, and many bars and restaurants, all grouped together within easy walking distance.

Boat Tours

The most popular tourist activities in Ninh Binh are boat trips. There are two in particular which attract lots of visitors, both of which follow rivers within the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex. The Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex is a 62 square kilometre area notable for its steep side limestone hills, slowly meandering rivers, and partly submerged caves.

The most popular of the two boat tours is the one which departs from the centre of Tam Coc Village and follows a route along the Tam Coc-Bich Dong Valley. The other only slightly less popular boat tour starts from a boat pier about 8 km by road from Tam Coc Village and follows a route through the Trang An Grottoes.

Both tours pass through several submerged caves and last around 90 minutes. There’s no need to book. You simply turn up, pay, and wait for the next available boat. Tours operate from 08:00 until around 18:00 throughout the year, although they don’t operate during rainy weather.

Other Attractions in Ninh Binh

There are other things to do in Ninh Binh besides go on boat tours, and none of the other major attractions are anywhere as busy as the two main boar tours. The other attractions to visit in Ninh Binh include:

• Bai Dinh Temple: Bai Dinh Temple, also referred to as Bai Dinh Pagoda, is 700 hectare Buddhist temple complex located 23 km by road to the north west of Tam Coc Village. The older part of the temple was established in the 11th Century, however, it’s the new part of the temple which is the most impressive. The most popular parts of the temple are its 13 storey pagoda, 2 enormous prayer halls, 22 metre tall bell tower, and row of 500 life sized statues of important monks.
• Hang Mua Peak: This hill has a small pagoda at the top which you need to climb about 500 steps to reach. The views from the top are spectacular and it’s one of the most photographed locations in Vietnam. The walk up to the top starts about 4 km by road from Tam Coc Village.
• Hoa Lu Ancient Capital:Located 15 km by road from Tam Coc Village, in the same direction as Bai Dinh Temple, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was Vietnam’s capital city from 968 to 1009.
• Phat Diem Cathedral: Phat Diem Cathedral is a Catholic church completed in 1891. The cathedral features a unique mix of European and Vietnamese architectural styles. To reach Phat Dien Cathedral you need to travel 25 km by road to the south east of Tam Coc Village.
