About Travel to Binh Thuan

The coastal areas of Binh Thuan Province are a popular holiday destination for both foreign and domestic tourists. By train it’s a 3 to 4 hour journey from Ho Chi Minh City to Binh Thuan, compared to a journey of 7 to 8 hours to reach Nha Trang. Binh Thuan Province also has some unique features which attract visitors, including several long beaches and strong coastal winds which are ideal for certain types of water sports.

Arrival by Train

Binh Thuan Railway Station is located a fairly long distance away from any of the popular tourist areas. From the train station it’s a 12 km journey south to reach the main city, and a 40 minutes journey in a taxi to reach the province’s main tourist centre (Ham Tien Village) which will cost about 500,000 VND.

Visitors who want to avoid paying for expensive taxi journeys should take a local bus service from Binh Thuan Railway Station to Phan Thiet and from there take another bus or a minivan to their final destination.

Phan Thiet City

Phan Thiet is the largest city in Binh Thuan Province with a population of over 300,000. Phan Thiet has a sandy beach and nearby tourist accommodation, however, the city itself is not really a tourist destination in the same way as Nha Trang. In fact, what Phan Thiet is best known for in Vietnam is the fish sauce which is made there on an industrial scale.

Phan Thiet City has one major tourist attraction, the Po Shanu Towers, which is located 7 km to the east of the city centre. The Po Shanu Towers is a temple complex built in the 9th Century by the people of the Cham Empire which ruled over the area for around 1,000 years.

Beaches in Binh Thuan

Travelling along the coast from the Phan Thiet City in both directions, south and east, there are long sandy beaches. The most popular of the beaches are the ones along the stretch of coastline running 27 km east of Phan Thiet City as far as Mui Ne Village.

The name ‘Mui Ne’ is often used to describe the whole 27 km long stretch of coastline to the east of the main city rather than just the village itself. The name is misleading as there is a series of beaches and villages along the way. Ham Tien Village, located on the 10 km Rang Beach, is the most developed part of the coastline. Ham Tien Village is also the focal point for kite surfing in the area. There are equipment rental shops, kite surfing schools, and events held during the kite surfing season in Ham Tien Village.

To the south of Phan Thiet City is a 20 km long stretch of sandy beach sometimes referred to as Tien Thanh Beach. Tien Thanh Beach ends at Ke Ga Cape, which is a rocky headland with a 19th Century lighthouse. This part of the coastline has some larger resort complexes, particularly the Novaworld Complex, which are popular with Asian families.

Sand Dunes

Binh Thuan Province also has two large inland areas of sand dunes, the Red Dunes and the White Dunes. These two desert-like areas are popular tourist attractions. In both locations visitors can slide down the dunes on plastic sledges and drive sand buggies. The dunes are also a place where you can see plants, animals, insects and reptiles which have adapted to the arid conditions.

The Red Dunes are located a short distance to the north of Mui Ne Village. The White Dunes are further away, 27 km by road to the north east of Mui Ne Village. In order to visit either set of dunes you either need your own transport or alternatively to join an organised tour.
