About Travel to Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi is the closest major railway station to Phong Nha Village, which is the main access point to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Passengers travelling by train to Phong Nha Village have two decisions to make when they arrive in Dong Hoi:

• Whether to stay 1 night in Dong Hoi, or travel the same day to Phong Nha Village.
• What form of transport to take to Phong Nha Village, which is 44 km from Dong Hoi.

Dong Hoi City

Dong Hoi is a small coastal city with around 120,000 permanent residents. Dong Hoi is a very new city having been rebuilt over the last 60 years after being almost entirely destroyed by the United States Air Force in 1965. The city attracts a steady stream of Vietnamese holidaymakers, but very few foreign visitors because there are more interesting coastal cities in Vietnam to visit, such as Da Nang or Nha Trang.

Nonetheless, Dong Hoi does have good points, particularly the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere of a city which has good amenities and relatively few people employed in the tourist industry. Dong Hoi also has 2 good beaches very close to the city centre, Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach, and 2 excellent beaches located about 60 km to north, Da Nhay Beach and Ly Hoa Beach.

Staying Overnight in Dong Hoi

Dong Hoi has over 50 hotels catering to leisure travellers, ranging in price from the equivalent of $10 USD a night to over $100 USD per night. At all price ranges the hotels in Dong Hoi generally represent very good value for money.

One thing to bear in mind if you are planning to book a hotel for the night is that many are located near either Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach, 6 km by road to the east of the train station. There are, however, also some smaller inexpensive hotels located within easy walking distance of the ticket hall at Dong Hoi Railway Station on the approach road to the station, including the Hung Thinh Motel, which is 160 metres walk away from the entrance to the station.

Unfortunately, you do need to travel some distance from the train station in Dong Hoi if you want to eat ‘international cuisine’. Popular restaurants such as Oregano’s Pizza and 7th Heaven Restaurant are located in the far east of the city near the Nhat Le River.

Public Bus to Phong Nha

Public bus services to Phong Nha depart from Nam Ly Bus Station, which is 1.3 km walking distance east of Dong Hoi Railway Station. Services operate during daylight hours, roughly from 06:00 until 17:00, although the timetable changes depending on the season.

Taxi to Phong Nha Village

During the tourist season a wide variety of different types of taxis, licenced and unlicenced, wait in front of Dong Hoi Railway Station for the arrival of long distance trains and passengers wanting to travel to Phong Nha Village. Unfortunately, this tends to be one of the most expensive taxi journeys in terms of cost per kilometre that you can take in Vietnam. Arranging a pick up service from a hotel in Phong Nha Village is often a cheaper option as is using a ride hailing app.
